ASTR 421: Galaxies
Course Work
This course aims to have a diversified portfolio of exercises to
maximize comprehension and retention. These will include
- In-class exercises and group projects,
- Homework,
- Mid-term and Final Exams, and
- a term research project culminating in an oral presentation.
- Final grades will be based on your rank in the class.
- Outstanding performance is required to earn an A.
- All aspects of the course matter; not just the exams.
- We will drop your lowest homework and your lowest in-class exercise.
- In effect, you get a free pass on one of each assignment.
- There will be no make-ups: you get to miss one, then you don't.
- The tentative grading scale
will carry the following weights:
- 30% Class Participation*
- 20% Homework
- 20% Mid-term exam
- 10% Research project**
- 20% Final exam
I may adjust these as the semester progresses, depending on how the course
evolves. I will only do this to more fairly represent the
efforts you have made should they deviate from this plan.
* Class participation will include in-class
exercises, group projects, class discussion, and other projects as we
devise them.
** See this link
for further details. Note that you will need to discuss your choice of
topics directly with me. Don't put this off until the end of the term.
