The Data Pages
For more complex data archives, I have mostly used the script
uufiles
to package multiple data files.
When you click on one of the highlighted data packages,
your browser will be filled with a lot of apparent nonsense.
Use the "save as" option of your browser to create a file
of this information on your own disk. The data can then be
unpacked following the information in the header. On UNIX
systems, this is as simple as saying "csh file" - the uuencoded
data will self unpack into replicas of the original data files
plus any explanatory (README, etc.) files that might be included.
NOTE: be sure to do this in a blank directory created for this purpose.
Many files will be created, so this is the best way to keep track of
them. Also, should we happen to have any file names that are identical, your
original files could be overwritten. So do be sure to create a directory
for the data before unpacking.
Other formats you will encounter here are gzip compressed tar archives and
straight ascii.
